With the increasing human population and the consequent risein the demand for food sources, the field of agriculture has now grown into a vast sector enriched with modern technological equipment and scientific knowledge. It has come a long way from just tilling the soil with a few bulls, to more complicated advanced procedures.
High Yield Variety Seeds (HYV)
When the traditional ways of farming were unable to meet the demands of the growing populations, seeds which can give a higher yield within a short period of time were introduced. Any agricultural production would succeed, only if the initial seeds utilized are high-quality and productive. These high yield seed varieties have less mature time and can be grown quite easily. Furthermore, they are capable of producing a better harvest than the traditional methods.They are more resistant to unfavorable environmental conditions and pest or any other disease condition.
Every agricultural system needs adequate water. Rain-fed farming is carried out using only rainwater. Although this system is ideal for a region with plenty of rainfall all year along, it is of no use for areas where rain is a rare treat. Irrigation systems ensure a continuous supply of water to the crops throughout the year, irrespective of rain or drought.Irrigation water can come from both groundwater and surface water sources. This water is applied to the soil using a variety of techniques including sprays, tubes, and pumps.Surface irrigation,Sprinkler irrigation,Center pivot irrigation, and Drip irrigation are a few modern irrigation techniques commonly in use.
By using advanced seeds, irrigation systems with the addition of modern fertilizers, pesticides, and weedicides a variety of modern farming techniques have evolved; some clearly have descended from the ancient traditional methods while the others are based on latest scientific knowledge and practices.
