Honey is a natural sweetener,a thick vicious substance produced by bees.Bees collect nectar drop by drop by visiting thousands of flowers. This nectar is broken down into sugar inside honeycomb. On visiting a supermarket to shop for Honey, you are in a dilemma choosing the best honey.Pure honey, raw honey, natural honey......the labelling confuses as to which to buy.Does natural honey mean unadulterated?Does pure honey mean pure water and sucrose without any additives? It is a million dollar question.
How do bees make honey?
COLLECTION OF NECTAR
When the flowers bloom, bees visit millions of them and collect pollen and nectar. With the help of proboscis, straw like tongue, they suck nectar from the plants. They store it in their stomach to be transferred to bees in the hive.
CONVERTING HONEY FROM NECTAR
Once the sacs are full the bees return to the bees hive and the nectar is transferred to the mouth of indoor bees.It passes mouth to mouth from bee to bee. This continues until the water content of nectar reduces to 20%.When the bee is collects nectar and stores in stomach,it produces protein and enzymes which helps in conversions of nectar to honey.
FILLING AND EVAPORATION OF NECTAR IN THE HONEYCOMB
The regurgitation process happens until the semi digested nectar is deposited in the honeycomb.
Here the bees fan the nectar to dry the remaining moisture in the nectar. By fanning with their wings bees speed up the evaporation process. The evaporation takes place at a temperature of approximately 32°C.Eventually by secreting liquid from it's abdomen the bee seals the comb, which eventually hardens into beeswax.
Bees store this honey as a reserve food for winters. And it stays fresh for an indefinite time period. The aroma, taste and texture remains fresh. The physical characteristics of honey depends majorly on the type of flowers a bee visits. And since humans have a sweet tooth like bees,we collect it from the hives and use it as a sweetener,as spreads and for it's therapeutic values.
The commercial honey being marketed in stores are artificially processed and the impurities in form of pollen and dirt are removed. Along with that the honey loses its essential natural nutrients. It is considered almost dead and is just sugar without the nutritional values.Ultra filtering uses high tech procedures using high heat.It filters pollens and what remains is not pure honey.Hence utmost care should be taken while choosing your honey. You can test your honey easily. And here's how......
WAYS TO IDENTIFY ARTIFICIAL HONEY
*Fill a glass with water.Drop a spoon of honey into the glass. If it settles at the bottom as a lump it's pure.If it dissolves, consider it to be adulterated.
*On the thumb of your hand put a drop of honey. If it spreads it's adulterated. Pure honey stays intact.
The golden sugar is the hard work of the bees. Most natural and immensely beneficial.Enjoy it in its most pure and unadulterated form and stay healthy.
